Big week in Bilbao
Bilbao's Semana Grande, known in Basque as Aste Nagusia, is the city's main festival in the Basque Country, Spain. Held annually in August, usually starting on the Saturday following August 15th, Semana Grande lasts for nine days and is distinguished by a plethora of cultural, artistic, and recreational activities for all ages. During these days, the city comes alive with a varied program that includes bullfights, concerts, shows, theater, dances, traditional sports, and an international fireworks competition that lights up Bilbao's sky every night.

The Vista Alegre Bullring becomes a focal point for bullfighting enthusiasts, while different stages throughout the city host local and international artists. There are also theatrical performances and dance exhibitions, many of them outdoors, as well as competitions of traditional Basque sports such as pelota, stone lifting, and wood chopping. Children's activities, workshops, games, and shows are specially designed for the youngest, and popular meals and gastronomic fairs offer the opportunity to taste typical regional dishes.

The symbol of Semana Grande is Marijaia, a figure created especially for these festivities that represents the joy and festive spirit of Bilbao. The celebration begins with the launch of the chupinazo from the balcony of the Arriaga Theater and ends with the burning of Marijaia in the Bilbao estuary. Semana Grande de Bilbao is a vibrant festival that attracts thousands of visitors every year, establishing itself as an unmissable event that reflects the rich culture and hospitality of the people of Bilbao.
